Repurposing South Africa’s Retiring Coal-Fired Power Stations for Renewable Energy Generation: A Techno-Economic Analysis

چکیده

South Africa is one of the most carbon-intensive economies in world, but it presently experiencing an energy crisis, as its utility company cannot meet country’s demands. The use renewable sources and retiring coal-fired power stations are two important ways alleviating this problem, well decarbonizing grid. Repurposing for generation (RCP-RES) while maintaining sustainability reliability has rarely been researched. This paper proposes macro- microelements repurposing Camden with aim improving through a low-carbon system. In model, concentrated solar (CSP) photovoltaics (SPV), combination storage technologies (STs), were employed RCP-RES, owing to their excellent levels availability fleet regions. simulation results show that densities CSP SPV significantly lower compared plant (CFPP). Both only able generate 8.4% 3.84% rated capacity retired CFPP, respectively. From economic perspective, levelized cost electricity (LCOE) analysis indicates cheaper than coal technology, even when considering

Techno-Economic Analysis of Solar Tower Aided Coal-Fired Power Generation System

In this paper, we conduct a techno-economic analysis of a 1000 MWe solar tower aided coal-fired power generation system for the whole life cycle. Firstly, the power output (from coal and solar thermal energy) under variable direct normal irradiance and grid demand are studied. Secondly, a financial assessment is performed, including profits and losses of the plant project. Thirdly, sensitivity ...

Techno-economic assessment of polymer membrane systems for postcombustion carbon capture at coal-fired power plants.

This study investigates the feasibility of polymer membrane systems for postcombustion carbon dioxide (CO(2)) capture at coal-fired power plants. Using newly developed performance and cost models, our analysis shows that membrane systems configured with multiple stages or steps are capable of meeting capture targets of 90% CO(2) removal efficiency and 95+% product purity. A combined driving for...

Quantification of radionuclides and associated radiological risk estimation of coal combustion residues from a South African coal-fired power plant

Background: Radionuclides occur in coal combustion residues, such as fly ash and bottom ash, which are by-products of coal combustion. They pose potential radiological risks to people present in the surrounding areas. Materials and Methods: Gamma spectrometry was performed to determine the radionuclide activity concentrations in a coal-driven power plant located in the Limpopo province, South A...

Economic analysis of atmospheric mercury emission control for coal-fired power plants in China.

Coal combustion and mercury pollution are closely linked, and this relationship is particularly relevant in China, the world's largest coal consumer. This paper begins with a summary of recent China-specific studies on mercury removal by air pollution control technologies and then provides an economic analysis of mercury abatement from these emission control technologies at coal-fired power pla...
